Mesoscale networks and corresponding transitions from self-assembly of block copolymers

Abstract: A series of cubic network phases was obtained from the self-assembly of a single-composition lamellae (L)-forming block copolymer (BCP) polystyrene-block-polydimethylsiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) through solution casting using a PS-selective solvent. An unusual network phase in diblock copolymers, double-primitive phase (DP) with space group of Im3¯m, can be observed. With the reduction of solvent evaporation rate for solution casting, a double-diamond phase (DD) with space group of Pn3¯m can be formed. By taking advan… Show more

“…Also, the lipids with single tail and head chains can self-assemble into a series of bicontinuous cubic structures with liquid crystalline properties in the water environment [ 1 ]. The bicontinuous structures are similar to the recently reported continuous cubic phases (Ia3d, Pn3m and Im3m) in the block polymer system [ 24 ]. Cubic structures with Ia3d, Pn3m and Im3m symmetries were observed to be stable at a relatively higher temperature in the ME–water mixtures as determined by X-ray diffraction; phase diagrams were constructed based on water content and temperature [ 19 ].…”

“…For toluene (δ toluene = 8.9 cal 1/2 /cm 3/2 ), the difference in the solubility parameters (δ PS = 9.1 cal 1/2 /cm 3/2 , δ PDMS = 7.4 cal 1/2 /cm 3/2 ) indicates selectivity towards PS domains, giving rise to double gyroid. Furthermore, chloroform (δ chloroform = 9.3 cal 1/2 /cm 3/2 ) enables the formation of different network phases such as double diamond and double primitive (DP), as already reported in the literature [36]. Note that PDMS swollen ratio is 10% larger in chloroform than in toluene, as reported by Whitesides et al [37].…”

“…78,130,131 Figure 19 shows an example of a 3D SVSEM reconstruction created by registration of a stack of 214 image slices of a polystyrene−polydimethylsiloxane (PS−PDMS) that forms the DD structure. The DD sample 132 was cast from a PS−PDMS (51 kg/mol for PS block and 35 kg/mol for PDMS block) 5 wt % chloroform solution. The acquisition and SVSEM analysis of DD follow the procedure reported in ref 78.…”
