Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Complex Bone Diseases: Bone Cancer, Bone Infection and Osteoporosis

Abstract: Bone diseases, such as bone cancer, bone infection and osteoporosis, constitute a major issue for modern societies as a consequence of their progressive ageing. Even though these pathologies can be currently treated in the clinic, some of those treatments present drawbacks that may lead to severe complications. For instance, chemotherapy lacks great tumor tissue selectivity, affecting healthy and diseased tissues. In addition, the inappropriate use of antimicrobials is leading to the appearance of drug-resista… Show more

“…In recent decades, significant advancements in pharmaceutical industry and medicinal chemistry have led to deep understanding of physico-chemical properties of medical compounds and provided the opportunity for recognition of cellular absorption strategies for effective treatments [160][161][162][163][164]. Initially, in some cases, such as chemotherapy for cancer, therapeutic methods relied on the use of toxic drugs with undesirable complications and limited beneficial effects [165].…”

“…In the next couple of sections, we describe Gd–MSN in more detail. These nanoparticles are based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) that have a number of advantageous features among various nanoparticles including the ease of synthesis and chemical modifications [ 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 ]. They are synthesized by the sol–gel method that involves condensation of TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) in the presence of templating surfactant solution.…”
