Mesoporous Alumina from Colloidal Biotemplating of Al Clusters

Abstract: A simple and green synthesis route was disclosed for the achievement of mesoporous alumina microparticles employing polysaccharide nanoparticles (α-chitin nanorods) as templates. Pore textures can be tuned by the cationic alumina precursor. Compared to small cations, the use of Al13 and Al30 oxo-hydroxo clusters leads to better defined and elongated mesopores. Electron microscopy and spectroscopic ((13) C, (27) Al NMR, XPS) measurements demonstrated that this is related to the effective coating of α-chitin nan… Show more

“…The upfield shifting of the peaks in this spectrum compared to what is expected for γ-Al 2 O 3 may be due to the more disordered structure of the amorphous Al 2 O 3 . 36,57 Upon calcination at 900 °C, the peaks sharpen and shift downfield, consistent with the improved crystallinity observed in the PXRD. The second minor tetrahedral site is again observed in this sample, both as a visible shoulder of the tetrahedral peak in the 1D spectrum (Figure 4c) and as a distinct peak in the MQ-MAS spectrum (Figure S16c).…”

“…34 Recently, we prepared helicoidal mesoporous chitosan templates from crustacean shells and then functionalized these with PMMA to form photonic hydrogels. 35 However, there is a limited description of the use of chitosan nanofibrils to template alumina materials as there are only two reports, of chitin-templated mesoporous alumina 36 and chitosan-templated alumina microspheres. 37 Many papers have reported the preparation of alumina catalyst supports, 9,38−40 but there are very few investigations of making γ-Al 2 O 3 aerogel-like materials.…”

“…Boltoeva et al demonstrated that an alternating current electric field is capable of aligning NCh in a few minutes and they used this to obtain chitin-silica composites [90]. With the same method, mesoporous silica-titania and pure alumina catalysts were templated, but no hierarchical order was reported [91][92][93].…”

“…The first two weight loss intervals below 160 °C are attributed to massive loss of H 2 O and chlorine compounds in Al 3+ -based gels with the increase of temperature (the removal of chlorine compounds is determined according to the following XRD results). 53 , 54 The third weight loss between 160 and 350 °C occurs at the same interval as that of the template PEO- b -PMMA (Fig. S3a, ESI † ), indicating the decomposition of the block copolymer.…”
