Mesopic foveal contrast sensitivity is impaired in diabetic patients without retinopathy

Abstract: Mesopic foveal CS is impaired in diabetic patients despite good visual acuity, a normal fundus examination and normal OCT. Early central visual function impairment may occur in diabetic patients before the appearance of retinopathy.

“…49 Impaired visual function preceding clinically visible DR has also been observed in some population-based studies. 50,51 In the present study, we demonstrated with noninvasive SS-OCTA that CC perfusion reduction may precede retinal vascular changes in the macula of diabetic eyes. Although the outer retina receives most of its blood supply from the CC, 52 whether reduced perfusion contributes to abnormal visual function in diabetic patients before overt retinopathy still requires further investigation.…”

“…Contrast sensitivity was assessed in middle‐aged people with or without diabetes who had no eye disease. Those with diabetes had reduced contrast sensitivity . Worryingly, impaired contrast sensitivity occurs in young people.…”

“…Sometimes a deficit in contrast sensitivity was found, whereas visual acuity was reported as normal. The difference between visual acuity and contrast sensitivity is especially apparent in clinical cases such as myopia, early cataracts 14 , congenital glaucoma 14 , and the initial stages of diabetic retinopathy 15 .…”
