Meso-β to -γ-Scale Wind Circulations Associated with Precipitating Clouds near Baiu Front Observed by the MU and Meteorological Radars

Abstract: During the Baiu season (17 June-8 July 1991) we carried out simultaneous tropospheric observation by using the MU (Middle and Upper atmosphere) radar (VHF band, Kyoto University) and meteorological radars (C band of Osaka Meteorological Observatory, X band of Hokkaido University and C/Ku band of Kyoto University). Vertical distributions of three components of wind field and precipitation particles were observed by the MU and C/Ku-band radars, respectively. The C-and X-band radars were used to investigate horiz… Show more

“…A few bands of convective cells are formed in the trailing portion of the precipitation systems. Variations in the vertical motion associated with the passage of organized convections in these cloud systems are analyzed by MU radar (Shibagaki et al 1997(Shibagaki et al , 2000.…”

“…1), line-shaped precipitation systems (width A 20 km, length A 100 km) are sometimes formed and developed around Osaka Bay. Shibagaki et al (2000) analyzed a hierarchical structure of meso-b-and mesog-scale cloud systems in the meso-a-scale cyclone during Baiu season using middle and upper atmosphere (MU) radar and meteorological radars. Seko and Nakamura (2003) investigated meso-b-scale line-shaped precipitation system in mid-latitudes using numerical models.…”

“…(4) the BMF embeds many medium to mesoscale disturbances, which move eastward along the front as developing and cause heavy rains. The disturbances tend to develop near Japan, where the temperature gradient is large (e.g., Iwasaki and Takeda 1993;Ninomiya 2000;Shibagaki et al 2000).…”
