Mesh-Free Simulation of Complex LCD Geometries

Abstract: We use a novel mesh-free simulation approach to study the post aligned bistable nematic (PABN) cell.By employing the Qian-Sheng formalism for liquid crystals along with a smooth representation of the surface posts, we have been able to identify two distinct stable configurations. The three-dimensional order field configurations of these states and their elastic free energies are consistent with both experimental results and previous simulation attempts. However, alternative states suggested in previous studies… Show more

“…Here we extend these by investigating the PABN T -P switching behaviour. In this, we use an identical geometry setup to that described in [40]. Periodic boundary conditions are imposed in the x and y directions, the xy repeat unit representing a single post.…”

“…SPH has proved to be a useful method for modelling many different classes of industrial applications. For example, Cleary et al (2007) discusses the use of SPH in die casting, resin transfer moulding, pyrometallurgical processes with reactive solids, slurry flow in sag mills and the mixing of large particulate solids, Yakutovich et. al.…”

“…They numerically reproduce the diagonal and rotated states in a 2D Landau-de Gennes (LdG) framework and the numerical modelling is in good agreement with experiments. The work June 17, 2016 Liquid Crystals Draft5 is [15] has been vigorously followed up in a batch of papers [16][17][18] where authors consider other polygonal geometries with mixed boundary conditions (planar and homeotropic) with a view to control pattern formation by manipulating geometry and boundary treatments and greater control promises new applications.…”
