Merging the Social Influence Theory and the Goal-Framing Theory to Understand Consumers’ Green Purchasing Behavior: Does the Level of Sensitivity to Climate Change Really Matter?

Abstract: This study explored the formation of consumers’ green purchasing behavior (GPB) and investigated the moderating effect of sensitivity to climate change (SCC) to address this current knowledge gap. An integrated model merging the Social Influence Theory and the Goal-framing Theory was developed with the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) paradigm. An empirical study was conducted, surveying 583 respondents and analyzing the questionnaire results using structural equation modeling. The results show that media, f… Show more

“…Other widely used theories include goal-framing theory [ 45 ], self-determination theory [ 46 ], protective motivation theory [ 47 ], stimulus-organism-response paradigm [ 48 ], and so on. These theories explain the influence of internal and external factors on individual pro-environmental behavior and provide ideas for understanding the antecedents of this behavior.…”

“…The S–R theory posits that human behavior is a response to an external stimulus and has been used to explain human behavior. Here, complex human behavior is decomposed into two parts: stimulus and response (Yang et al, 2021 ). Expanding on the S–R theory, the S–O–R model proposed by Mehrabian and Russell ( 1974 ) added the “organism” (O) as a mediation variable to include the psychological state of a stimulated person.…”

“…For example, Mostafa ( 2007 ) describes GPB as an eco‐friendly purchasing style and argues that the green products that consumers buy should be sensitive, recyclable, and beneficial to the environment. Yang et al ( 2021 ) define GPB as purchasing environmentally friendly products to satisfy consumer needs with minimal harm to the environment.…”

“…In line with Johansson et al (2021) , this would provide an opportunity of holistic evaluation capturing the effects of social processes on the individual actors and the goal frames guiding their choices. There are different forms of social processes that could influence how the individual actors look at situations and evaluate goals ( Gifford and Nilsson, 2014 ; Yang et al, 2021 ). In further research, it would be beneficial to integrate other psychological factors and possible drivers of sustainable choices to the goal-framing theory.…”
