Mercury speciation in urban landfill leachate by cold vapor generation atomic absorption spectrometry using ion exchange and amalgamation

Show more

“…The preconcentration procedures based on the trapping of mercury on a gold filament preconcentrator are followed by rapid thermal desorption and detection. The absorption of mercury in a gold surface is highly effective and well known [124,125]. This phenomenon usually generates selective procedures because mercury is the only species absorbed if gases acids are removed.…”

“…The airborne emission of mercury from landfills has been widely reported. As a mercury sink, landfills act as a source of mercury from both landfill gas [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] and leachate [ 18 ]. Therefore, if the landfill acts as a methylation and demethylation reactor, the behavior of mercury in the landfill will have a strong influence on the generation of both MeHg and elemental mercury.…”

“…The determination of Hg was carried out by FI-CVG-ICP-MS as described in previous studies. 49,50 The determination of Hg using the CVG-ICP-MS system was preferred because it minimizes problems related to memory effects and results in an enhancement of sensitivity in comparison with the conventional nebulization system. 51,52 The ow injection system was composed of a peristaltic pump (Gilson, Minipuls, France), a manual injector and a U-type gas-liquid separator.…”
