Mercury Redox Chemistry in the Negro River Basin, Amazon: The Role of Organic Matter and Solar Light

Abstract: Pristine water bodies in the Negro River basin, Brazilian Amazon, show relatively high concentrations of mercury. These waters are characterized by acidic pH, low concentrations of suspended solids, and high amounts of dissolved organic matter and are exposed to intense solar radiation throughout the year. This unique environment creates a very dynamic redox chemistry affecting the mobility of mercury due to the formation of the dissolved elemental species (Hg 0 ). It has been shown that in this so-called blac… Show more

“…These results demonstrate the influence of seasonality. A similar behavior of hydrogen peroxide 300 disappearance in freshwater samples collected from the Amazon region has previously been observed and they noted slower hydrogen peroxide consumption rates in freshwater collected during the dry season than in the water samples that were spiked with LOM (low degraded) from this region (Jardim et al, 2010).…”

“…Some authors have applied this approach to LOM in aquatic systems, where the environmental importance of LOM is associated with its scavenger capacity of other species, as hydrogen peroxide, influencing the redox conditions of the environment (Bisinoti, 2005;Jardim et al, 2010). In this paper, the kinetics of hydrogen peroxide consumption were 90 investigated as a method to distinguish between LOM and ROM.…”
