Purpose of Review Heavy and toxic metals are becoming more prevalent in the water sources of the globe, which has detrimental repercussions for both human health and the health of ecosystems. The summary of recent findings on treatment possibilities of toxic metal species by nanomaterials should facilitate the development of more advanced techniques of their removal. Recent Findings The high concentrations of chromium, mercury, and arsenic identified in wastewater cause a hazard to human health. There is a wide variety of nanoadsorbents and nanophotocatalysts used for heavy/hazardous metal removal. Recent research has resulted in the production of advanced nanostructures that exhibit extraordinary heavy/hazardous metal adsorption effectiveness and photocatalytic diminution of metal ions. These nanostructures have physically and chemically tunable features. Summary In this review article, the use of carbon-based nanomaterials, polymer-based nanomaterials, and semiconductor-based nanomaterials are extensively discussed to remove mercury, chromium, and arsenic ions from wastewater by the adsorption process. Advanced nanomaterials involved in photocatalytic reduction are also comprehensively discussed.

Kecil. Konvensi Minamata wajib dilaksanakan oleh negara-negara peratifikasi, termasuk Indonesia. Salah satu sektor prioritas target penghapusan penggunaan merkuri dan penambangan ilegal adalah Pertambangan Emas Skala Kecil (PESK). Studi-studi yang telah dilakukan didominasi oleh pemantauan kualitas lingkungan di lokasi tambang. Riset kebijakan untuk penilaian keberhasilan pemerintah daerah masih jarang, padahal pihak ini adalah penentu keberhasilan pencapaian target penghapusan merkuri di PESK tahun 2025. Penelitian deskriptif dilaksanakan tahun 2019-2020 di enam daerah terpilih. Tujuan penelitian yang dilakukan untuk mengetahui persepsi (pengetahuan) stakeholders terkait merkuri dan korelasinya terhadap kesiapan pemerintah daerah dalam penghapusan penggunaan merkuri di wilayahnya. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah survei secara purposive sampling, metode pemilihan respondennya adalah accidental sampling, berdasarkan kesediaan menjadi responden, dan arahan responden satu ke responden berikutnya. Hasil riset menunjukkan bahwa persepsi stakeholder terkait pengelolaan merkuri hanya lima variabel (B1, B2, B3, B4 dan B7) yang terkategorikan tahu hingga sangat tahu untuk seluruh kabupaten yang diujikan (LI -L6), serta satu variabel (B9) terkategorikan tahu di dua kabupaten (L2 dan L3), sisanya masih terkategorikan tidak tahu hingga ragu-ragu. Tingkat pengetahuan responden kurang berkorelasi dengan tingkat kesiapan pemerintah daerah yang masih rendah. Dari 19 variabel, hanya sembilan variabel yang mempengaruhi persepsi stakeholder terkait merkuri. Riset ini menyimpulkan bahwa stakeholder memiliki pengetahuan umum yang baik tentang merkuri, akan tetapi responden ragu-ragu akan kewajiban pemerintah daerah (Pemda) dalam penyusunan Rencana Aksi Daerah Pengurangan dan Penghapusan Merkuri sesuai amanat Perpes No. 21/2019 tentang Rencana Aksi Nasional Pengurangan dan Penghapusan Merkuri. Responden kurang memperoleh informasi tentang keberadaan Komite Penelitian dan Pemantauan Merkuri dan keterlibatan Pemda didalamnya.

An easy naked-eye detection technique for mercuric ions in water using silanized quantum dots is demonstrated. Cadmium selenide quantum dots were synthesized and rendered water soluble by silica overcoating. The quantum dot emission was instantly turned off by the mercuric ions in the analyte, enabling visual detection. The emission quenching was associated with a concomitant bathochromic shift, both in the absorption and emission profiles. The underlying mechanism is a permanent surface modification of quantum dots by mercuric ions, altering the electronic structure and, in turn, the photophysical properties. The results confirmed the potential of this simple system to be customized for on-site visual detection of mercury contamination in water bodies, biological fluids, and soil with high selectivity and sensitivity.
