Mercury in alpine fish from four rivers in the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: As a global pollutant, high levels of mercury (Hg) have been found in remote ecosystem due to the long range atmospheric transport. In this study, a total of 60 fish samples were collected from four rivers across the Tibetan Plateau to study the accumulation of Hg in remote and high-altitude aquatic environment. The total Hg (THg) and methylmercury

“…Trace elements are generally non-biodegradable in natural environments with low concentrations and some of them are essential micro-nutrients (Milićević et al, 2017). Elevated concentrations of trace elements can cause serious environmental problems that not only threaten air, aquatic and soil ecosystems, but also cause food chain accumulation (Cong et al, 2010;Shao et al, 2016). Both natural and anthropogenic factors affect the distribution of trace elements and anthropogenic source is usually a main contributor (Lee et al, 2011).…”

“…The THg concentrations in the cell samples were analyzed using a Hydra II C mercury analyzer (Teledyne Leeman Labs, Hudson, USA) according to the USEPA method 7473 (Shao et al, 2016;USEPA, 1998). Briefly, a 50 μL cell suspension of every treated sample was pipetted into a nickel boat.…”

“…Heavy metals are generally non-biodegradable in natural environments with low concentrations and some of them are essential micronutrients [2]. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in the environment can threaten the food chain, causing various harmful problems for plants, animals, and humans [3]. Introduced heavy metals hazards to food chain are related to their bioaccumulation and bio-magnifications through biogeochemical processes [4], their toxicity, persistence, and nonbiodegradability [5].…”
