“…Teixeira et al [ 67 ] measure a negative value in Deania calcea (−14.56) from the North-East Atlantic similarly to Ralston et al [ 34 ] reporting a negative HBV Se value in Isurus oxyrinchus (−16.4). Values positive but close to zero are reported by Medina-Morales et al [ 59 ] and Teixeira et al [ 67 ] in Mustelus henlei (0.08) from Ocean Pacific and in Etmopterus pusillus from Ocean Atlantic (0.27), respectively. Other reference data regarding sharks display, instead, HBV Se positive, as observed in Isurus oxyrinchus (4.6), Galeorhinus galeus (6.3), Sphyrna spp.…”

“…Olmedo et al [ 51 ] report levels in the range of 0.02–0.25 μg g −1 w.w. (average 0.10 μg g −1 w.w.) in the muscle of Prionace glauca from the Mediterranean Sea (Spain), while Matos et al [ 55 ] and Branco et al [ 56 ] describe Se concentrations equal to 0.30 μg g −1 w.w. and in the range of 0.084–0.46 μg g −1 w.w., respectively, for the same species from the Atlantic Ocean. Ulusoy et al [ 57 ] find Se levels up to 1.55 μg g −1 w.w. in Squalus acanthias , while Bosch et al [ 49 ] display that Se content in the muscle tissues of Mustelus mustelus from South Africa does not exceed 0.70 μg g −1 w.w. Pantoja-Echevarría et al [ 58 ] and Medina-Morales et al [ 59 ] find concentrations of 0.17 μg g −1 w.w. and 0.03 μg g −1 w.w. in Mustelus henlei from Ocean Pacific, respectively.…”

“…Higher concentrations of Se in the liver can be associated with the presence of Hg (although it was not measured in the present study), giving that in this organ Hg detoxification occurs through Hg-Se complexes (Branco et al 2007;Medina-Morales et al 2020). For Mn, liver is fundamental for its homeostasis as it regulates the distribution and excretion of this element in the organism (Papavasiliou et al 1966).…”

“…Despite having among the highest levels of Hg recorded in any vertebrate, the physiological and behavioral effects of Hg concentrations on elasmobranchs remains largely unknown (Wosnick et al 2023 ). Although chronic dietary MeHg uptake of 0.2 µg/g, ww in freshwater fish have been found to affect reproduction and other subclinical endpoints (Depew et al 2012 a), studies on the effects of MeHg in the shark brain indicate abilities to demethylate (Ehnert-Russo and Gelsleichter 2020 ) and potentially use detoxifying mechanisms through selenium-Hg liaisons (Branco et al 2007 ; Dutton and Venuti 2019 ; Medina-Morales et al 2020 ) or other physiological abilities (Le Croizier et al 2020 ). For example, while Merly et al ( 2019 ) found that blood concentrations of Hg in white shark ( Carcharodon carcharias ) exceeded levels that are known to be toxic to humans, no negative effects on shark health parameters were detected, including body condition, total leukocytes, or granulocyte to lymphocyte ratios.…”
