Mercury Exposure: Protein Biomarkers of Mercury Exposure in Jaraqui Fish from the Amazon Region

Abstract: This study presents data on the extraction and characterization of proteins associated with mercury in the muscle and liver tissues of jaraqui (Semaprochilodus spp.) from the Madeira River in the Brazilian Amazon. Protein fractionation was carried out by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D-PAGE). Mercury determination in tissues, pellets, and protein spots was performed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GFAAS). Proteins in the spots that showed mercury were characterized by electrospray ioniz… Show more

“…Besides, in jaraqui ( Semaprochilodus spp. ), a species of Amazonian fish, researchers found approximately two atoms of Hg per RPS27a molecule in hepatic tissue (J. C. S. Vieira et al, 2018). Moreover, in the hepatic and muscular tissue of filhote ( Brachyplatystoma filamentosum ), a giant catfish in the Amazonian rivers, Hg can also bind to RPS27a (de Queiroz et al, 2019).…”

“…The fish species Brachyplatystoma filamentosum is also the most consumed by the riverside population of the Madeira River. Thus, consumption of Brachyplatystoma filamentosum may pose a risk to the health of these coastal communities from the Brazilian Amazon [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”

“…This new area of scientific knowledge has contributed to elucidating the physiological and functional aspects of proteins responsible for transporting metal ions in living organisms [8]. The elucidation of mercurial species complexed by proteins and enzymes using the metallomics allow detailed study of an increase or decrease in the expression of these metalloproteins, compared to changing limnological characteristics and the availability of mercury species in the environment of the Amazon Rivers [2,4,9]. Thus, metalloproteins and metal-binding proteins characterized under these study conditions may be used as biomarkers of mercury exposure in fish from the Amazon region.…”
