Trace metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) were determined in two operationally defined fractions (HCl and pyrite) in sediments from Ensenada and El Sauzal harbors (Mexico). The HCl fraction had significantly higher metal concentrations relative to the pyrite fraction in both harbors, underlining the weak tendency of most trace metals to associate with pyrite. Exceptionally, Cu was highly pyritized, with degrees of trace metal pyritization (DTMP) >80% in both harbors. Dissolved Fe flux measurements combined with solid phase Fe sulfide data indicated that 98 mt of Fe are precipitated as iron sulfides every year in Ensenada Harbor. These Fe sulfides (and associated trace metals) will remain preserved in the sediments, unless they are perturbed by dredging or sediment resuspension. Calculations indicate that dredging activities could export to the open ocean 0.20±0.13 to (0.30±0.56)×10(3) mt of Cd and Cu, respectively, creating a potential threat to marine benthic organisms. Degrees of pyritization (DOP) values in Ensenada and El Sauzal harbors were relatively low (<25%) while degrees of sulfidization (DOS) were high (~50%) because of the contribution of acid volatile sulfide. DOP values correlated with DTMP values (p≤0.001), indicating that metals are gradually incorporated into pyrite as this mineral is formed. Significant correlations were also found between DTMP values and -log(Ksp(MeS)/Ksp(pyr)) for both harbors, indicating that incorporation of trace metals into the pyrite phase is a function of the solubility product of the corresponding metal sulfide. Transboundary seabird conservation in an important North American marine ecoregion

Many seabird species of conservation concern have large geographic ranges that span political borders, forcing conservation planners to facilitate their protection in multiple countries. Seabird conservation planning within the seabird-diverse California Current System (CCS) marine ecoregion presents an important opportunity for transboundary collaborations to better protect seabirds across the USA/México border. While seabird populations in the USA are relatively well-studied and well-protected, the status of seabird populations in the Mexican region of the CCS is not well known and seabird colonies have been virtually unprotected. This study synthesizes and supplements information on breeding seabird diversity and distribution, identifies and ranks threats to seabirds and evaluates conservation capacity in the Mexican CCS to provide a framework for transboundary seabird conservation throughout the CCS ecoregion. Island-breeding seabirds in México support 43–57% of CCS breeding individuals, 59% of CCS breeding taxa and a high level of endemism. Connectivity between populations in México and the USA is high. At least 17 of the 22 extant Mexican CCS breeding seabirds are USA/México transboundary breeders or foragers, 13 of which are federally listed in the USA or México. Introduced predators and human disturbance have caused multiple seabird population extirpations in the Mexican CCS because breeding colonies lack legal protection or enforcement. However, conservation capacity in this region has increased rapidly in recent years through the establishment of new protected areas, growth of local conservation non-governmental organizations, and increase in local community support, all of which will allow for more effective use of conservation funds. Transboundary conservation coordination would better protect CCS seabirds by facilitating restoration of seabird colonies in the Mexican CCS and enabling an ecoregion-wide prioritization of seabird conservation targets to direct funding bodies to the most cost-effective investments.

IntroducciónEl conocimiento de la distribución de los metales traza en los sedimentos marinos es importante debido a que éstos son sumideros de sustancias de origen natural y antropogénicas, mismas que se preservan en las partículas de los sedimentos o son recicladas hacia la columna de agua (Fergusson 1990). Uno de los metales más tóxicos para la biosfera es el Hg (Lacerda y Solomons 1998), el cual tiene una gran afinidad con la fase particulada (Hurley et al. 1994) y, en sedimentos costeros contaminados, su concentración comúnmente evidencia la evolución histórica de la contaminación con este metal (Gobeil y Cossa 1993). Por lo tanto, la información en este contexto es importante para identificar el riesgo potencial de contaminación y toxicidad de Hg para el medio marino y los seres humanos (Besada et al. 2006, Cecilio et al. 2006. IntroductionKnowledge of trace metal distribution in marine sediments is important since they act as sinks for substances of natural and anthropogenic origin, which are preserved in sedimentary particles and recycled into the water column (Fergusson 1990). Mercury, one of the most toxic metals to the biosphere (Lacerda and Solomons 1998), has a great affinity to the particulate phase (Hurley et al. 1994). In contaminated coastal sediments, its concentration is an indication of the historical evolution of Hg pollution (Gobeil and Cossa 1993). Information in this context is therefore relevant to identify the potential risk of Hg contamination and toxicity in the marine environment and humans (Besada et al. 2006, Cecilio et al. 2006 ResumenSe estudió la distribución y el enriquecimiento de Hg en sedimento superficial recolectado en agosto de 1998 de 37 estaciones a lo largo de la costa noroccidental de Baja California (CNBC). Para el análisis de Hg se utilizó la técnica de vapor frío en un espectrofotómetro de absorción atómica. Se midieron también los porcentajes de lodos (<63 μm) y de materia orgánica. Las concentraciones de Hg mostraron una distribución espacial homogénea en la zona de estudio. La concentración media de Hg (58.2 ng g -1 ) fue similar a la encontrada en la Cuenca del Sur de California. Se observaron enriquecimientos de Hg en cuatro estaciones localizadas en la zona norte y centro de la zona de estudio. En general, las concentraciones de Hg (30.4-96.5 ng g -1 ) mostraron niveles relativamente bajos que no presentan riesgo al ambiente de acuerdo con las guías de calidad de sedimento marino de Norteamérica.
