This study establishes an eco-friendly anti-wrinkle treating process for cotton fabric. Sodium hydroxide-liquid ammonia pretreatment followed by 6% (w/w) PU100 adding citric acid pad-cure-dry finishing. In this process, citric acid (CA) was used as the fundamental crosslinking agent during finishing because it is a non-formaldehyde based, cost-effective and well wrinkle resistance agent. Environmental-friendly waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was used as an additive to add to the CA finishing solution. Six commercial WPUs were systematically investigated. Fabric properties like wrinkle resistance, tensile strength retention, whiteness, durable press, softness, and wettability were well investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectra and X-ray diffraction spectra were also measured and discussed before and after adding waterborne polyurethane. Tentative mechanism of the interaction among the WPU, CA, and modified cotton fabrics is provided. The effect of cotton fabric pretreatment on fabric performance was also investigated. After the eco-process’s treatment, the fabric wrinkle resistant angle was upgraded to 271 ± 7°, tensile strength retention was maintained at 66.77% ± 3.50% and CIE whiteness was elevated to 52.13 ± 3.21, which are much better than the traditional CA anti-wrinkle finishing based on mercerized cotton fabrics. This study provides useful information for textile researchers and engineers.

The changes in the physical characteristics and hand of denim fabric through aftertreatments such as biowashing using only neutral cellulase enzyme and liquid ammonia treatment were investigated. The basic physical properties of denim were measured using the Kawabata evaluation system for fabric. The results showed that biowashing increased softness and created a fade-out effect with natural colour; however, it reduced strength and elastic recovery as a result of damage to the cellulose by the enzyme. On the other hand, liquid ammonia treatment gave improved physical properties, which can be attributed to fast and uniform swelling, but resulted in a darker colour. Therefore, a combination of liquid ammonia treatment with biowashing is desirable in order to obtain a good fade-out effect while achieving softness, smoothness, and elastic recovery.

The combined scouring, bleaching and mercerising of single jersey cotton knitted fabrics through the use of high-concentration NaOH was evaluated in this study. The eff ect of that new combined process was compared, contrasted and analysed with pristine scoured, bleached fabric and conventional bleached fabric. Surface morphology, structural analysis and the colour strength of dyed fabrics were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diff raction (XRD) and spectrophotometric analysis. The barium activity number and bursting strength of treated fabric was evaluated and analysed in accordance with the relevant AATCC test standards. It was found that a sample treated through combined scouring, bleaching and mercerising demonstrated a higher level of smoothness and lustre than typical scoured and bleached fabric. The treated sample exhibited decreased crystallinity, as well as the transformation of the crystalline phase in a similar manner. The barium activity number, bursting strength and improved K/S value were also in line with the separately mercerised fabric. The above described properties of the combined scoured, bleached and mercerised fabric are sound evidence of the eff ectiveness of the process.
