Economists often assume that agricultural markets in history were competitive, and all producers received the same price. In contrast, most agricultural historians deem prices to differ among agents, according to their social status and «power». This paper tests these opposite views with a database of some 12,500 transactions for the São Paulo area in Brazil in the first decades of the 19 th century. Prices received by farmers were positively related to total sales, a proxy for the size of the estate, and also to the share on the relevant market, which measures the market power. These results are consistent with the anecdotal evidence about the growing importance of large slave estates which, however, did not wipe out small household farms.Keywords: market power, agricultural prices, early 19 th century, Brazil JEL Classification: D40, N56, Q13 RESUMENLos economistas asumen que los mercados agrícolas a lo largo de la historia son competitivos y todos los productores reciben el mismo precio. En contraste, la mayoría de los historiadores agrícolas consideran que los precios difieren entre agentes en relación a su poder y estatus social. Este papel examina estos puntos de vista opuestos a partir de una base de datos de 12.500 transacciones para el área de São Paulo en Brasil en las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. Los precios recibidos por los agricultores estuvieron positivamente relacionados con las ventas, una proxy del tamaño de la hacienda y también con la cuota de mercado principal (una aproximación al poder de mercado). Estos resultados son consistentes con la evidencia cualitativa acerca de la importancia creciente de los grandes estados esclavistas sin dejar fuera de la explicación a los pequeños granjeros.Palabras clave: poder de mercado, precios agrícolas, siglo XIX, Brasil

O presente artigo busca analisar as transformações que aconteceram na praçamercantil fluminense na transição entre os séculos XVIII e XIX. Observando algumastrajetórias dos negociantes cariocas, percebe-se que a magnitude de seus negóciosdestoava dos ditames impostos pelo exclusivo colonial metropolitano ainda em vigorno século XVIII. Ainda que restrito, um grupo de negociantes grossistas comgrandes cabedais foi proeminente no comércio oceânico de escravizados, seequiparando aos empresários portugueses da península como agentes na prática.Explicitando suas trajetórias e demonstrando a visão que alguns agentesmetropolitanos tinham da questão, buscaremos desvelar a constituição de uma elitemercantil colonial que ultrapassou os limites do exclusivo metropolitano e se tornouimportante alicerce do império português no século XIX.

Poor Man's Crop? Slavery in Brazilian Cotton Regions (1800-1850)

Much of the literature about cotton production in Brazil during the nineteenth century considers cotton as a "poor man's crop" - cultivated by small farmers who did not employ a large slave labor force. However, information provided in population maps from the period between 1800 and 1840 shows that slaves represented half the population in Maranhão, the most important cotton exporter in Brazil until the 1840s. This represented a higher share than in any region in northeast Brazil and was comparable to the slave population shares recorded in the United States' cotton South. This paper shows that, during the cotton boom years (1790-1820), not only was the cotton exported from northeast Brazil to Britain and continental Europe cultivated on large plantations, but also, slave prices were higher in Maranhão than in other Brazilian provinces.
