Mentors' competence in mentoring nursing students in clinical practice: Detecting profiles to enhance mentoring practices

Abstract: Instrument(MCI), which includes seven sub-dimensions and 44 items, was used to collect data. K-means cluster and binary regression analyses were performed to detect mentor profiles and determine how various factors affect competence, respectively. Results:The K-means cluster analysis identified three distinct profiles: A (n = 926); B (n = 566); and C (n = 85). The profiles showed significantly different values (p < .001) across all seven areas of mentoring competence. In comparison with the other profiles, nur… Show more

“…Research shows that variation in nurse mentors’ competence directly affects nursing students’ learning outcomes in clinical practice placements ( Myrick and Yonge, 2001 ; Tang, 2021 ). Nurse mentors must be competent in mentoring, demonstrating specific knowledge of students’ learning objectives and the core elements of nursing and learning processes as well as possessing skills linked to personal qualities and the ability to build trusting reciprocal relationships, to cooperate with stakeholders and to provide feedback and evaluation ( Mikkonen et al, 2022 ). These professional, pedagogical and personal skills play a significant role in supporting nursing students’ learning process ( Ford et al, 2016 ; Gurková et al, 2016 ; Tuomikoski et al, 2018 ) and help students become confident professionals ( Mikkonen et al, 2020 ; Tuomikoski et al, 2018 , 2020 ).…”

The lack of support and training for qualified practitioners is likely associated with the omission of mentorship as a clinical responsibility (Mikkonen et al 2022 ). More recently, during the coronavirus disease (COVD-19) pandemic, the urgency to save lives surpassed other clinical responsibilities, including mentorship.…”
