Abstract: Contribution:The fatherhood issue is a serious problem in the South African context and no fatherly presence is a negative and devastating trend in many South African homes. Consequently, mentoring as an approach can be a significant contribution to fathers who grapple with fatherhood issues.

Protestant Church Strategy in Building Spiritual Identity for Generation Alpha

This research aims to explain Protestant Church strategy in building Christian identity for Generation Alpha (Gen Alpha) amidst the adverse effects of globalization. Currently, the generation is navigating the complex terrain of a postmodern era characterized by the pervasive dissemination of concepts such as skepticism, subjectivism, and relativism. Gen Alpha has experienced a profound shift in cultural values, with a marked transition from religiosity to secularity. Consequently, Church must direct its attention towards the ideological and spiritual well-being of the generation. The influence of distortionary forces on the perception of reality is a matter of concern, stemming from various sources such as peers in the community, the educational system, social media, and the vast expanse of the Internet. The result show that Gen Alpha has been raised in the context of post-Christian and post-Church cultural environments. In this research, a qualitative research approach is used, predominantly through an extensive review of pertinent literature. The examination commences with an in-depth exploration of Gen Alpha and the formation of spiritual identity. Subsequently, the strategic initiatives conducted by Protestant Church are examined and the initiatives include worship services, fatherly mentorship, and cultivating a strong Christian identity. The conclusion shows the collaborative efforts of Church with the pastoral team, in the construction of its ministry. This is characterized by the implementation of transpersonal actions, the guiding of healing initiatives for the needs of families, and the cultivation of personalized spiritual practices. An important component of the comprehensive strategy includes the training and education of fathers to assume a central role in building the spiritual development of children. Furthermore, Church values the spiritual building of children aged between 4 and 14 years to fortify Christian identity.

The Children’s Act, 38 of 2005, (South Africa) states that children in need of care and protection face social ills such as father absence and in addition some children abuse alcohol and drugs, among other things. The Act defines the essence of parental responsibilities and rights regarding children, and fatherhood in this context can be a notable trending topic. This research posits that fatherhood occurs predominantly within the context of families. Notwithstanding this, the nature of fatherhood is changing within an African context. Suspicion of attributing to men any positive aspect is evidenced within the social sciences, let alone appreciation of the role of men in families. The present project results show that transforming fatherless children and fatherhood can be ambiguous and challenging in a world dominated by men. Yet, this paper suggests and embraces faith as a strength perspective where God is seen as Father and parent apropos establishing his Fatherhood in the hearts of men, which characterizes the fatherhood of men, while it is life-giving in a world staggered by father absence. Father absence impedes children from receiving and giving love, and therefore, the manifest constant behavioural problems of children. Poor academic performance and selfperception are linked to father absence and children may suffer due to a lack of educational support and access to health care. Social workers try to collaborate with fathers and mothers to nurture a healthy relationship with their children. Unfortunately, these efforts fail in many instances and children become vulnerable due to a lack of care and love from both parents.

Detrimental factors contributing to the non-functioning of Christian men in their leadership role in context of family and church: A qualitative analysis

This paper engaged the qualitative method of structured interviews with Christian men due to non-functioning in the family and church. The paper emphasises the leadership role of the man in context of family and church. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate how men function in their leadership role in context of family and church so that challenges may be identified, and practical solutions be recommended to the church for the equipping of Christian men. The question that this paper endeavoured to answer was: Which detrimental factors have contributed to the non-functioning of Christian men in their role as spiritual leaders in context of family and church? The structured interviews used in this study involved fifteen male participants selected from the surroundings of evangelical churches in Johannesburg, South Africa. This paper provides a description of the research process related to the qualitative data analysis and its results related to the participant responses. The feedback from the respondents shed light on the need for the equipping of Christian men in the selected churches for their leadership role in the mentioned contexts. This paper contributes to Christian families and churches having a sound biblical worldview of the leadership role of the man, and a clear understanding of the authority of Scripture in their lives and ministry. This paper comes from a chapter in a larger study from a PhD thesis: The leadership role of the man in context of the family and church: A pastoral-theological study.
