Today, enterprises to be efficient and competitive within their business environments should seamlessly adapt, collaborate and interoperate with each other. However, the diversity in the way they organize their knowledge through ontologies, brings about the crucial need for establishing semantic interoperability between all communicating parties. One approach to solve this problem is the use of MENTOR, a particular methodology based on the development of a common, top-level "reference ontology" that serves as an intermediary in the communications between the various enterprises, harmonizing not semantically coincident ontologies that represent the same segment of reality. This methodology allows the enterprises to keep their own ontologies and semantics unchanged internally, enhancing thus semantic interoperability between them with low intra-enterprises changes, cost and effort. This paper proposes the integration of MENTOR methodology within an Interoperability Service Utility (ISU), i.e. an intelligent system that serves as a utility software component to promote interoperability among communicating enterprises. The present work describes design and implementation specifications of such an infrastructure and explains how MENTOR methodology will enable the proposed ISU to seamlessly provide the necessary set of e-services that will deliver and sustain interoperability across its enterprise users.

Abstract. Today, enterprises are typically in a constant process of acquiring and updating its information technologies, however typically without an overall view of the global inter and intra enterprise's system integration. Foreseeing the future of internet, researchers have been proposing new methodologies and platforms to assist such integration in the network of applications and data. However, implementing new technologies in organizations is a difficult task, since its quality needs for architectures development are more exigent and critical than ever, due to the systems complexity and dimension, semantic needs, and to the interoperability requirements to interact with third party applications and infrastructures. Scientific foundations for EI are envisaged to roadmap such general knowledge covering the general laws of the operation on enterprise interoperability in the future of internet. This paper reports research results from ongoing European Commission supported projects that are members of the Future Internet Enterprise Systems (FInES) European Cluster 1 . The paper draws concepts from the complex systems science and proposes a methodology for seamless networked Supply Chain Planning (SCP), by using a domain reference ontology, data model representation standards, software components evaluation and interoperability checking processes. The methodology VALTE is used to assure that enterprises use tools for SCP compliant to semantics, represented in a common reference ontology, created by the MENTOR methodology. These two horizontal methodologies are vertically supported by interoperability checking processes, which contribute for an interoperable supply chain planning system on the future internet.

Nowadays, competition is experienced not only among companies but among global supply chains and business networks. There is a demand for intelligent world-class solutions capable of reinforcing partnerships and collaborations with an improved cross-cultural understanding. However due to the proliferation of terminology, organizations from similar business environments have trouble cooperating, and are experiencing difficulties exchanging electronically vital information, such as product and manufacturing data, even when using international standards. To address similar interoperability problems, the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems program (http://www.ims.org/content/glossary) is providing an opportunity to develop industry-led R&D initiatives, building common semantics and integrated solutions. The SMART-fm project was one of those initiatives. It led to the development of the international standard for product data representation and exchange in the furniture sector (ISO 10303-236) and identified the challenge of semantic interoperability which is today a major challenge in modern enterprise integration. This paper presents a knowledge framework to address that challenge and make interoperable intelligent manufacturing systems a reality. It proposes to use semantically enriched international product data standards, and knowledge representation elements as a basis for achieving seamless enterprise interoperability.
