Mental Models of Ambient Systems: A Modular Research Framework

Abstract: Abstract. This paper outlines our current research program in the fields of ambient intelligence and context-aware computing and the tools we are building to accomplish this research program. From a discussion of our conception of mental models in the domain of ambient context-aware computer systems we derive hypotheses which we intend to test empirically. A modular framework for implementing and assessing situation awareness in humans and computers is introduced. We describe the framework's architecture and i… Show more

“…Schmitt et al [6] worked out a modular research framework to elaborate and finally evaluate the influence of mental models on the perception and usage of ambient system applications. They understand mental models as an enabling mechanism of people which helps them to realize a system's functioning explain interactions and anticipate future system behavior.…”

“…We have previously developed a framework for ambient intelligent systems [16,17], but its architecture had two main shortcomings. The first one was a lack of flexibility and versatility with regard to how the system interacts with sensors and actuators, and the second one was a lack of ability to deal with user concerns about privacy.…”

“…These problems can be mitigated by implementing virtual sensors, actuators and users in a simulation environment. MACK [11] is a framework developed by our research group on top of which application systems for different domains can be built. Key requirements for a simulating environment to be used with the development of MACK are:…”
