Mental Imagery Skills in Competitive Young Athletes and Non-athletes

Abstract: Mental imagery is a fully immersive multi-sensory procedure that associates as numerous senses to create a mental image and process it without the presence of external stimuli. In the sport situation, imagery has been designated as the state in which people imagine themselves while effecting abilities to deal with the forthcoming duty or improve performance. Methodical analyses have revealed that imagery increases performance in motor tasks. This study aims at observing not the vividness of image but the cogni… Show more

“…The Italian version of the BFQ-2 questionnaire has been used [26]. BFQ-2 assesses personality traits divided into 5 major factors, each of which are divided into two sub-dimensions: Openness (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious), Conscientiousness (efficient/organized vs. easy-going/careless), Energy (or extraversion; outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved), Agreeableness (friendly/compassionate vs. analytical/detached), Emotional stability (or neuroticism; sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident) [34]. A sixth variable, called lie scale, has been added to the BFQ-2.…”

“…A sixth variable, called lie scale, has been added to the BFQ-2. This scale, consisting of two sub-dimensions (lie egoistic + lie moralistic) measures the participant's tendency to provide a false profile of him/herself [34]. Variables are evaluated on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (absolutely false) to 5 (absolutely true).…”

“…This imagery is a multisensory immersive procedure that uses as many senses as possible to create and process a mental image without using external stimuli. In most athletic events, the state in which people imagine themselves while influencing abilities to cope with upcoming duties or improve performance is referred to as imagery [1]. However, it helps to mould a lasting impression on the mind creating the real picture of objects or events.…”

“…Mental imagery [1] is denoted as "a symbolic sensory experience that may occur in any sensory mode" [3]. Researchers [4] stated that the faster the stimulus reaches the motor cortex, the faster the response time will be.…”
