“…[ 19 ]. Local studies also reflected that university students’ mental health had been remarkably affected by various factors during the pandemic, e.g., teaching and learning modes and fear of getting infected [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. University students’ emotional states were moderately affected, and financial burdens and living alone in hostels positively correlated with the students’ adverse psychological conditions [ 23 ].…”

“…The depression levels were higher among students whose monthly income was less, even though it didn't show statistical significance. there is evidence to suggest that those from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds and college students with heavier financial loads are more prone to experience depression and anxiety symptoms (Mcnamara et al, 2017;Lai et al, 2022). Moreover, subjective measures of SES may moderate the connection between objective measures of social class and depressed symptoms (Hoebel et al, 2017).…”

“…The literature suggests that COVID-related stress and threats are risk factors for mental health in tertiary students and young adults ( Moroń et al, 2021 ; Sun et al, 2021 ; Faisal et al, 2022 ; Green and Yıldırım, 2022 ). At the same time, a higher level of perceived self-competence in addressing pandemic-related issues (i.e., self-efficacy related to COVID-19) protects mental health and promotes well-being in university students ( Sun et al, 2021 ; Lai et al, 2022 ). Particularly, COVID-related self-efficacy, such as the belief in one’s ability to handle situations and adapt to challenges related to the pandemic, can have a significant effect on the psychological well-being of students ( Brailovskaia and Margraf, 2022 ).…”

In addition, students’ need satisfaction and satisfaction with university services were also positively related to their well-being under the pandemic ( Lai et al, 2022 ; Shek et al, 2022b ). According to Deci and Vansteenkiste (2004) , one best understanding of how the interaction between individual and his/her environment shapes human development is to examine “the degree to which the environment thwarts versus satisfied people’s basic psychological needs” (p. 24).…”
