Mental health screening: severity and cut-off point sensitivity of the Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire in male and female elite athletes

Abstract: ObjectivesTo examine the sensitivity/specificity of the Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire (APSQ) in both male and female elite athletes, and also assess internal consistency and convergent/divergent validity, and determine discriminative validity relative to current injury status.MethodsData were provided by 1093 elite athletes (males n=1007; females n=84). Scale validity and reliability values were benchmarked against validated measures of general psychological distress and well-being. ROC curve anal… Show more

“…Notwithstanding some notable exceptions (e.g., Donohue et al, 2018 ) randomized controlled trials are needed. While there is growing knowledge related to the unique mental health challenges that elite athlete experience and new individual-based models are being developed and implemented (Rice et al, 2020c ), relatively little is known from the existing literature of controlled trials regarding the best type and form of team-based intervention. While self-compassion focussed therapies appear promising, high quality trials are needed.…”

“…An increased interest in understanding the complexity of mental health among elite athletes has led to the empirical development [7] and validation [8] of athlete-specific questionnaires that are acceptable and appropriate for measuring mental health symptoms in the athlete environment. There remains an unrealized potential for universal electronic screening for mental health concerns, especially as a preparticipation examination when competitive athletes transition to a higher level (administered by sporting organizations) [9].…”

“…The Athlete Psychological Strain Questionnaire (APSQ) has emerged as an acceptable screening tool for use in male and female elite athletes. 59 Cricketers experiencing subthreshold symptoms could be responsive to early intervention as a result of identification from a screening tool designed for sporting cohorts. Timing of screening must be carefully considered, given that risks such as those that occur with physical injury, may fluctuate at various times throughout an elite athlete’s career.…”
