“…In the HIV Cost and Services Utilization Study, more than one half of a national probability sample of 2864 HIV-infected patients screened positive for a current psychiatric disorder, including 36% for depression, 26.5% for dysthymia, 15.8% for generalized anxiety disorder, and 10.5% for history of panic attacks [1]. In a multisite study, Acuff and colleagues [2] found that 59% of HIV patients sought mental health treatment for major depression, 22% for dysthymia, 25% for generalized anxiety disorder, 14% for agoraphobia, 48% for a substance abuse disorder, and 22% for an alcohol disorder. In a cohort of HIV-infected homosexual/bisexual men with no history of injection drug use, Rabkin and colleagues [3] found a 10% rate of current depressive disorder, an 11% rate of anxiety disorder, and an 11% prevalence of noninjection drug or alcohol disorder.…”
