Mental health at 5 years among children born extremely preterm: a national population-based study

Abstract: The objective of this study was to compare mental health at 5 years in children born extremely preterm with a reference group, and assess associations between functional abilities and mental health within the preterm group. In a national Norwegian cohort with gestational age 22-27 weeks or birthweight 500-999 g, mental health was assessed with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), cognitive function with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Revised (WPPSI-R), motor function wi… Show more

“…51 This may also be the case for the EP/ELBW group, since the attending children had a higher proportion of mothers with high education than not, which is associated with less-frequent mental health problems for their children. 24 Values are expressed as n (%) unless noted otherwise. a Both parent-and teacher-reported problems at or above cutoff.…”

“…Characteristics of the cohort, definitions of neonatal characteristics, and overall outcome in terms of mortality and morbidity until 5 years of age have been published. 13,24,30,31 At 11 years of age, the EP/ELBW cohort consisted of 372 children (Fig 1). Children who at 5 years had an IQ <70, nonambulatory CP (class 4 or 5 on the Gross Motor Function Classification for CP), 32 deafness, or blindness 13 were excluded (n = 33).…”

“…Deficits in regulation of emotions and problems in situations requiring adaptation to changing social conditions are frequently observed in premature children (Elgen et al, 2012;Reijneveld et al, 2006;Skiöld, 2011;Wolke, 2010). With high probability, as children get older, emotional and behavioral problems may affect academic functioning (Reijneveld et al, 2006;Wolke, 2010).…”

“…203 Moreover, these problems are already evident on parent-reported behavioural screening questionnaires in the pre-school years. [204][205][206][207][208] If the constellation of behavioural outcomes associated with very preterm birth extends across birth at LMPT gestations, we would expect to find increased parent-reported behaviour problems at 2 years, albeit with less severity and lower prevalence. This finding may thus be indicative of a different behavioural profile among LMPT children from that among those born very preterm.…”
