Mental disorder and victimisation in prison: Examining the role of mental health treatment

Abstract: The findings suggest that not all inmates with mental disorders are at an increased risk of victimisation. Further, mental health treatment in prison also appears to be a risk factor of victimisation. More research is needed to further elucidate the relationship between mental disorders, treatment, and victimisation. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

“…Second, participation in treatment may simply remove individuals from the general population, thereby reducing their likelihood of being victimized. Third, it is also possible that utilization of services will increase risks of victimization (see e.g., Daquin & Daigle, 2018). The service use of such individuals is often visible to other inmates, who in turn may view such individuals as “easy targets” for victimization.…”

“…A high prevalence of mental health problems is present in prison populations [3]. There is also increasing epidemiological evidence that prisoners are more likely to suffer from mental health problems than the average population [4,5,6,7].…”
