Mental/behavioural health and educational outcomes of grandchildren raised by custodial grandparents: A mixed methods systematic review

Abstract: from supplementary childcare to co-caregiving while living in a multigenerational household. Another subset of grandparents, or custodial grandparents, act as the sole caregiver for a child in the absence of a parent. Almost 7.1 million grandparents live with their grandchildren in the United States and 13.4% of these are custodial grandparents (United States Census Bureau, 2020). “…This theme informs prevention and intervention efforts by highlighting the need for grandparent caregivers to access more resources that would prevent their grandchildren from entering the foster care system. The previous literature states that grandchildren raised by their grandparent have better outcomes than their same-age peers in the foster care system, and results from this study add to the literature by demonstrating the strong motivation of grandparents to provide a stable family unit for their grandchildren at any cost necessary [40]. This suggests that efforts to seek improved resources for grandparents to aid in the financial and emotional burdens associated with caregiving should continue.…”

“…Given the significant impact of child socioemotional and behavioral problems on child development, it is important to unpack the risk and protective factors associated with custodial grandchildren's socioemotional and behavioral outcomes. A recent systematic review summarized various factors at both the grandchild and grandparent levels associated with custodial grandchildren's socioemotional and behavioral well-being [16]. At the custodial grandchild level, some known predictors linked with their socioemotional and behavioral outcomes include custodial grandchildren's race, gender, age, prior traumatic experiences, social support, and self-esteem [17][18][19][20][21].…”
