Menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells differentiate into functional hepatocyte-like cells

Abstract: Orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is the only proven effective treatment for both end-stage and metabolic liver diseases. Hepatocyte transplantation is a promising alternative for OLT, but the lack of available donor livers has hampered its clinical application. Hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) differentiated from many multi-potential stem cells can help repair damaged liver tissue. Yet almost suitable cells currently identified for human use are difficult to harvest and involve invasive procedures. Recently,… Show more

“…However, some groups have reported positive expression of embryonic markers such as SSEA-4 and Nanog in MenSCs that were not found on MSCs from other sources (710). This raises the question whether these cells presenting earlier markers of stemness represent a more primitive progenitor than MSCs from other sources.…”

“…MenSCs were isolated and provided by the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (Mou et al 2013, Wu et al 2014, Lai et al 2015. Briefly, human menstrual blood was collected The χ 2 test was applied.…”

“…EnSCs can be easily isolated from menstrual blood by noninvasive acquisition. The noncontroversial extraction is also autologous and thus avoiding critical ethical issues9. A large number of reports have shown the therapeutic potential of EnSCs in restoring tissue function, such as treating myocardial infarction10, ameliorating stroke11, and improving chemotherapy-induced premature ovarian failure/insufficiency12.…”
