Meniscal tear outcome Study (METRO Study): a study protocol for a multicentre prospective cohort study exploring the factors which affect outcomes in patients with a meniscal tear

Abstract: IntroductionThis study is designed to explore the baseline characteristics of patients under 55 years of age with a meniscal tear, and to describe the relationship between the baseline characteristics and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) over 12 months. Research has highlighted the need for a trial to investigate the effectiveness of arthroscopic meniscectomy in younger patients. Before this trial, we need to understand the patient population in greater detail. Methods and analysisThis is a multicentre… Show more

“…Knee injuries account for the largest percentage of sport-related, severe injuries (i.e., injuries that cause more than 21 days of missed sport participation) [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures represent more than 50% of the cases, affecting 200,000 individuals in the United States each year [ 1 , 5 , 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Knee cartilage lesions affect around 900,000 individuals in the United States every year, resulting in over 200,000 surgical procedures [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Menisci injuries are the second most common knee impairment, with an incidence of 12–14% [ 9 ] and a prevalence of 60–70 cases per 100,000 in the United Kingdom [ 2 ]. ACL injuries alone account for an expenditure of more than $7 billion in the United States [ 10 ].…”

“…Recent studies have highlighted the need for research to identify a specific subset of patients where surgery may be beneficial and to undertake a study in this population [8][9][10][11]. However, before this work can be carried out more evidence is required to understand the current population of patients with meniscal tears.…”

“…Meniscal tears have been identified in a high proportion of asymptomatic individuals [ 17 ], therefore it is important to explore the significance patients place on the MRI results. Therefore, there is a clear need to understand the patient experiences of living with a meniscal tear [ 18 ] in order to aid current treatment decision through increased awareness of the treatment pathway.…”
