Meniscal replacement in dogs. Tissue regeneration in two different materials with similar properties

Abstract: In earlier studies, meniscal replacement with a porous polymer implant led to regeneration of neo-meniscal tissue. To evaluate the influence of the chemical properties on the tissue regeneration in the implant, in the present study, the meniscus in the dog's knee was replaced with either an aromatic 4,4-diphenylmethanediisocyanate based polyesterurethane implant (Estane) (n = 6) or with an aliphatic 1,4-butanediisocyanate based polyesterurethane implant (PCLPU) (n = 6). After 6 months, the knee joints were res… Show more

“…Similar to previous studies, a remodeling into a cartilage-like tissue with type II and GAGs was found in the inner higher loaded region of the scaffold. 40,41 However, the amount of differentiation after 6 months in this study was less than in previous studies with the same polymer. 40,41 Tissue differentiation from fibrovascular to cartilage-like had progressed in the 24-month implants, particularly in the central region of each scaffold.…”

“…A polyvinyl alcohol-hydrogel meniscus in rabbits showed promising results in terms of chondroprotection, but certain unresolved problems persisted, such as durability of the polymer, the fixation method, and complete tissue regeneration in a material that does not adhere to tissue. 18,19 Tienen et al 20 applied two different porous polyester urethane polymers as meniscus prostheses in dogs. Although they also showed promising results in respect of tissue formation, one of the materials (aromatic 4,4,-diphenylmethanediisocynate based) is thought to degrade into toxic products.…”
