Meniscal Cysts: Treatment Options and Algorithm

Abstract: Meniscal cysts are commonly seen in the knee. Symptomatic meniscal cysts tend to be located on the lateral side but magnetic resonance imaging studies indicate that medial cysts are more common. Meniscal cysts are commonly associated with horizontal meniscal tears. The arthroscopic management of symptomatic cysts should include debriding the horizontal meniscal tear (if nonrepairable) to fully decompress the cyst and the creation of a 5-mm channel from the joint into the cyst. If a vertical peripheral meniscal… Show more

“…Its topography agrees with other publications, which points out lateral injuries as the most commonly symptomatic. 7 Arthroscopic evaluation and MRI scans showed the association of the cyst in the reported case with a horizontal type meniscal lesion located in the middle onethird of the lateral meniscus. This is in agreement with the literature, which claims these cysts are commonly associated with horizontal lesions or lesions with horizontal components in the meniscus.…”

“…Enlarging cyst dimensions beyond 5 mm allows the valve mechanism to be interrupted, causing the pressures to become numb and avoiding its recurrence. 7 Isolated arthroscopic meniscal approach techniques without opening the cyst presented worse results than the combined approach. 10 An open surgical excision is indicated for large or multiloculated cysts.…”

“…Intra-oder periartikuläre Zysten des Kniegelenks sind oftmals Zufallsbefunde, die, sofern sie keine Beschwerden bereiten, nicht zwingend therapiert werden müssen [9,13]. Ausgenommen hiervon sind unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen Zysten mit Beziehung zum Meniskusgewebe, die in diesen Fällen für einen Behandlungserfolg mit adressiert werden sollten [2].…”

“…Furthermore, meniscal cysts may occur in both the lateral and medial sides. These are commonly associated with horizontal meniscal tears, and result in a void space within the meniscus 21 . The need for tailored tissue engineering-based approaches to enhance the healing of the meniscus is similar for all types of meniscal injuries.…”
