Meniscal allograft transplantation: a review of indications, techniques, and outcomes

Abstract: When compared to meniscectomy, meniscus allograft transplantation (MAT) may provide superior long-term benefits to young, active patient populations who have lost meniscal function because of irreparable damage, such as, an avascular tear, previous repair failure, and unsalvageable tear types. Positive outcomes are most likely to be achieved when meniscus allograft transplantation is performed in appropriately selected patients. Indications include patients younger than 50 years of age, with a history of subto… Show more

“…6 KOOS4 was used as the primary outcome measure (excluding KOOS Activities of Daily living), as it is well-established in this group of patients, and allows one summary score for analysis. [3][4][5] additionally, ProMs after Mat have been shown to be preserved for at least seven years. 7 Analysis of each of the five subdomains of KOOS was also performed.…”

“…KOOS subdomains and KOOS4 range from 0 (worst) to 100 (best), with a minimal important change reported from 8 to 10. [3][4][5][6] Statistical analysis. Baseline demographic data are displayed with means and standard deviations (sDs) for normally distributed data, and medians and interquartile ranges (iQrs) for non-normally distributed data.…”

“…Due to the length, cost and substantial rehabilitation of meniscal allograft transplantation, it is essential to select appropriate surgical candidates. It has been shown that appropriate candidates are young, healthy and active patients that are symptomatic after a prior meniscectomy and have failed further non-operative management [34]. A systematic review by Fanelli et al found that patients greater than 35 years old had significantly worse patient reported outcomes when compared to their younger counterparts [35].…”
