Abstract: NEONATAL MENINGITIS IN A GENERAL HOSPITAL IN LIMA, PERU, 2008 TO 2015 ABSTRACTAiming at describing the incidence, clinical characteristics and factors associated with neonatal meningitis (NM), a case series study was conducted from 2008 to 2015, where 53 neonates, 10 with early onset NM and 43 with late onset were included. An incidence of 1.5 per thousand live births and a lethality of 3.8% were found. The associated factors were peripartum fever, urinary tract infection and chorioamnionitis (P < 0.05). “…The percentage of bacterial isolation in CSF in febrile newborns with meningitis was 13.5%, the causative agents being coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and Listeria monocytogenes, similar to that described by Lewis et al (2018) 20 who included 43 febrile newborns admitted under suspicion of late meningitis, and in whom coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and Listeria monocytogenes were isolated in CSF cultures. Listeria monocytogenes are reported in 5-20% of cases.…”

“…Approximately 25% of 240 samples of produce in Trujillo markets contained L. monocytogenes , while 78% of 60 samples of sausage from markets in Lima were positive for L. monocytogenes . A 2017 study exploring neonatal meningitis found approximately 19% associated with the presence of L. monocytogenes – more than any other of the tested pathogens .The use of environmental microbiological survey data in conjunction with mechanistic exposure models could provide insight into the health and economic burdens of listeriosis in global sub regions that currently lack listeriosis case data.…”
