Meningioma of the internal auditory canal

Abstract: A comprehensive literature search identified only 14 well-documented cases of intracanalicular meningioma. A case is presented of meningioma confined to the internal auditory canal which was excised using a sub-occipital retrosigmoid approach. Preoperative MRI and CT scans were suggestive of intracanalicular vestibular schwannoma. Only the intraoperative findings, which were confirmed by the histological data, revealed that the tumor was a meningioma. We review the literature and discuss the diagnostic and the… Show more

“…In the cases reviewed, where facial postoperative function was described, more than 50% presented a “normal” facial nerve 6–8,11–12,15–27,31,33–34,36 . Some authors opted for a subtotal tumor removal in order to preserve the facial nerve 14,15,22,27 .…”

“…The cerebello-pontine angle (CPA) is the space, where meningioma is the second most common neoplasm following schwannoma [5,7]. In this location, meningiomas can be classified as being anterior or posterior to the internal acoustic opening, also referred to as premeatal and retromeatal location respectively [5].…”

“…Meningiomas developing inside the internal acoustic canal are very rare, and therefore there are only single scientific reports on this issue [2,4,7]. When diagnosing such tumors, the clinical and radiological resemblance to the most common IAM neoplasm, i.e.…”

“…When faced with VSs, the position of the FN is generally predictable, with the nerve displaced anteriorly and medially. Variability at the site of origin of a meningioma within the IAC may alter the location of the FN, which may be displaced posteriorly (4,8,16,23,24). An intracanalicular meningioma may also be firmly adherent to the facial and/or vestibulocochlear nerves, which may require meticulous sharp dissection.…”
