?Menigeal sign?: a characteristic finding of meningiomas on contrast-enhanced MR images

Abstract: In meningiomas, a flat, contrast-enhancing, probably dural structure adjacent to the tumor can occasionally be observed on Gadolinium-DTPA enhanced MR images. This so called "meningeal sign" was evaluated with respect to the differential diagnosis of meningiomas in MR imaging. The study included 29 patients with intracranial meningiomas and 24 patients with non-meningeal brain tumors. In all meningiomas, MR studies included T2-weighted as well as unenhanced and Gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced T1-weighted images. In a… Show more

“…This finding could only be demonstrated in one case with CT, because of the high density of bone structures which generally are immediately adjacent. The specificity of this sign for meningeal tumors, however, must be substantiated in further investigations [13]. Hyperostosis could be identified in MRI even with high convexity tumors, whereas these cases often evaded detection in CT [5].…”

“…CT and MRI examinations were evaluated retrospectively according to findings known to be indicative for the diagnosis of meningiomas from the literature [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. The tumor was characterized as homogeneous if a homogeneous enhancement of the non-calcified soft-tissue components was present.…”
