Memory outcome 2 years after anterior temporal lobectomy in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy

Abstract: Our results suggest that the long-term memory outcome of TLE patients undergoing ATL without invasive presurgical assessment may be good in most cases not only for right-sided but also for left-sided resections.

“…However, findings of verbal memory decline following epilepsy surgery vary. Although decline in delayed memory is commonly reported after left anterior temporal lobe resection, memory stability or a gradual return to presurgical level of memory functioning is also reported . This variability suggests the need to identify predictive factors.…”

“…Although decline in delayed memory is commonly reported after left anterior temporal lobe resection, [38][39][40] memory stability or a gradual return to presurgical level of memory functioning is also reported. 41,42 This variability suggests the need to identify predictive factors. Although our findings did not support CC area as a potential explanatory factor for DR-change, other "brain reserve" factors such as the structural and functional integrity of the ipsilateral hemisphere should continue to be explored.…”

“…Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) or selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH) is a surgical procedure used to treat intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (3). Many groups have reported significantly improved seizure outcome in approximately 60-90% of surgically treated patients (4,5,6,7,8). However, seizure frequency alone after surgery is insufficient to decide whether a patient is in a satisfactory condition, and concerns have been expressed regarding neuropsychological outcomes after surgery (6,9).…”

However, seizure frequency alone after surgery is insufficient to decide whether a patient is in a satisfactory condition, and concerns have been expressed regarding neuropsychological outcomes after surgery (6,9). Impairments of various cognitive functions, such as verbal memory, visual memory, naming, verbal fluency, and attention, have been reported after left-and right-sided surgeries (10).…”
