Memory Integration as a Challenge to the Consolidation/Reconsolidation Hypothesis: Similarities, Differences and Perspectives

Abstract: We recently proposed that retrograde amnesia does not result from a disruption of the consolidation/reconsolidation processes but rather to the integration of the internal state induced by the amnesic treatment within the initial memory. Accordingly, the performance disruption induced by an amnesic agent does not result from a disruption of the memory fixation process, but from a difference in the internal state present during the learning phase (or reactivation) and at the later retention test: a case of stat… Show more

“…In rats, it decreases anxiety 17,65,67,68 and attenuates conditioned fear by inhibiting, via its receptors in the central amygdala, the excitatory flow from the amygdala to brainstem sites that mediates fear responses 15,69 . In view of these properties, and of the general agreement that memory reactivation opens a malleability window during which any newly presented information can be integrated within the original memory representation 70,71 , we propose that prereactivation oxytocin treatment leads to the formation of a novel, less traumatic, fear memory representation which mediates resilience to trauma.…”

“…Depending on the information available at that time, memories can be updated, strengthened (by coherent information), disrupted (by inco herent information resulting from, for exam ple, amnesic treatments or interference) or greatly altered (false memory). We have des cribed evidence 5,6 showing that performance disruption due to posttraining amnesic treatments mainly results from impairments in retrieval that are induced by contextual differences between training and testing.…”
