Background:Since publication in 2006, the Bayley-III scale has been used widely in pediatric populations worldwide; however, there have been very few studies which examined the usefulness and the potential sex differences in a Chinese context. Aims:To assess the reliability and validity of the Bayley-III cognitive scale, and detect possible sex differences in term children so as to provide evidence for clinical and research use in China. Study design:Cross-sectional study. Participants and outcome measures:Of the 1589 children from 3 healthcare institutions that were initially recruited, a total of 1444 children were included in the final analysis. We randomly selected 5-10% children from the total sample to evaluate the test-retest, inter-rater and criteria-related reliability in order to meet the psychometric criteria of Bayley-III scale.Inter-item consistency, test-retest and inter-rater reliability of the scale were estimated using Split-half method and Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC). The content validity was evaluated by the Item-level Content Validity Index (I-CVI). The Mann-Kendall trend test was performed to assess trends of cognitive development, and post-hos Least Significant Difference test was used to detect age-appropriateness of items.Results: Six developmental pediatricians were trained to administer the Bayley-III cognitive scale. Inter-item consistency (n=1444) with Guttman split-half coefficient was above 0.8, while test-retest (n=144) and inter-rater reliability (n=74) had good to excellent ICCs of over 0.9. The criteria-related validity (n=74) of Bayley-III was acceptable, and associations with Gesell Developmental Schedules (GDS) were mainly above 0.8. The raw score of Bayley-III scale in total subjects (n=1444) showed an increased trend across all months of age (p<0.05), and only the score in age group of 35M16D to 36M15D declined in females (p<0.05, n=722). Female children presented a higher score than male children in all subjects and in the 18-23 months age group (p< 0.05).

Background. Decreased cognitive function is a common problem in the old adults, which has high risk of progression to Alzheimer’s diseases (AD) and other dementias. This study was aimed at finding out the association between physical activity and cognitive function. Methods. In total, 1514 participants with the age ≥ 55 years old registered in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) database were selected in this study. The association between physical activity and cognitive function was analyzed via the generalized additive model. The association between the variables and the cognitive function score was expressed as β coefficient with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results. After adjusting age, ethnicity, stratum, marital status, education, memory status, and memory changes, the cognitive function score was increased by 0.011 points for every 1-point increase in domestic score ( β = 0.011 , P = 0.043 ). Subgroup analysis indicated that in the female group, for every 1-point increase in the domestic score, the cognitive function score increased by 0.019 points ( β = 0.019 , P = 0.017 ). In people with good memory status, each 1-point increase in domestic score increased the cognitive function score of 0.020 points ( β = 0.020 , P = 0.017 ). Conclusions. The decreased cognitive function was correlated with decreased domestic physical activity. The increased domestic physical activity was associated with an increased cognitive function in females and people with good memory status. The findings might offer a reference for deep understanding of the association between physical activity and cognitive function.

Background and Objectives Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a common experience of self-perceived decline without objective cognitive impairment among older adults. SCD has been conceptualized as very early Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but the specific SCD features predictive of clinical or cognitive decline remain unclear. This systematic review is the first to characterize specific SCD features and their relation to longitudinal outcomes. Research Design and Methods Multiple electronic databases were searched from inception until August 2021 for longitudinal studies of adults aged >50 (mean>60) and free of dementia, with baseline SCD measurement and clinical or cognitive follow-up. Studies were screened for inclusion criteria and assessed for risk of bias using weight-of-evidence ratings. Results 570 potentially relevant studies were identified, and 52 studies evaluated for eligibility after initial screening. Thirty-three studies with medium to high weight-of-evidence ratings were included and results narratively synthesized. Measurement methods varied substantially across studies: the majority (n=27) assessed SCD symptom types and intensity, and consistently reported that higher symptom burden increased the risk for MCI and dementia. The evidence was less compelling for cognitive outcomes. A handful of studies (n=5) suggested a predictive role for SCD symptom consistency and informant corroboration. Discussion and Implications SCD symptom intensity emerged from our review as the most reliable predictor of future clinical outcomes. Combinations of SCD-Plus symptoms also had predictive utility. No single symptom was uniquely prognostic. Our findings support the quantitative evaluation of SCD symptoms in the assessment of risk for progression to MCI or dementia.
