“…Therefore, under any condition, the O/M ratio is lower if Am concentration in PuO 2± x is increased. This is a similar result to that found in (U,Am)O 2± x where increased Am content is seen to hinder oxidation . PuO 2 is much more resistant to oxidation than UO 2 , and we see here that adding Am further increases this resistance.…”

“…Am IV was also identified for the first time in association with Pu particles likely due to ingrowth from decay of Pu-241, based on its similarity to a previously measured Am L 3 -edge XANES spectrum of Am IV O 2 , and supported by DFT studies. 64 The size, morphology, and elemental observations, in conjunction with XANES and EXAFS analysis, suggest that the large discrete Pu particles in the sediments from beneath the Z-9 trench are PuO 2 , some likely from burnt Pu metal, and were deposited in the trench soil in their particulate form. It is known that DBBP-bearing extracts, TBP, and their soapy breakdown products (e.g., dibutylphosphate from TBP) were also disposed directly to the Z-9 trench, some in CCl 4 diluent contacted with RECUPLEX waste raffinate.…”

“…This spectrum was compared with that for Am IV O 2 and (U,Am III )oxalate and more closely resembles Am IV O 2 . 64 The relative stability of the different oxidation states of Am in the fluorite structure of PuO 2 was assessed by constructing a point defect model for PuO 2 from DFT. Using the point defect model, it is possible to predict defect concentrations under a range of relevant environmental conditions.…”
