Melt Spinning of Biodegradable Nanofibrillary Structures from Poly(lactic acid) and Poly(vinyl alcohol) Blends

Abstract: A novel fabrication process for preparing continuous thermoplastic nanofibrillary structures by using the conventional melt spinning method of thermoplastic polymer fibers is developed. Poly(lactic acid) nanofibrils with average diameter of 60 nm are obtained by processing water soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends at weight ratio of 70/30 and subsequent removal of the PVA matrix. The textile physical properties (tensile and elongation properties) of the PVA/PLA filaments are in… Show more

“…The calculation of the interfacial tension between PLA and PVA can be seen in Appendix, ηr=ηd/ηm is the viscosity ratio between the dispersed phase viscosity ηd and the matrix viscosity ηm, and γ̇ is the shear rate. ηr and ηm are obtained using oscillatory rheometer . It is worth noting here that the viscosities ηr and ηm depend on shear rate.…”

“…PLA as a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer has become very important in the field of tissue engineering. The minimum diameter of PLA nanofibers produced by melt electrospinning was found to be 740 nm, while those produced by extraction from its blend with PVA was 60 nm . Furthermore, it could be arranged in a two‐ or three‐dimensional structure .…”

“…As sacrificing polymer PVA was used by a few researchers, PVA could be dissolved in water that is less hazardous and environmentally safer than other solvents previously used. It should be considered that PVA degrades at a temperature less than melting temperature of many melt process able polymers that is a limitation for its use.…”

“…Mostly, fibrillar morphology can be analyzed from two aspects which are in close relation: morphological and rheological aspects. From a morphological point of view, various processing methods such as fiber spinning,18,19 injection molding,14 compression molding,20,4 and recently laminating‐multiplying elements (LMEs)8,20 have been applied and designed to fabricate well‐dispersed fibrils optimized to reach the highest mechanical strength. However, the library of fibrillar technology lacks complementary information about influence of processing temperature on fibril structure and its respective diameter and length can definitely help engineers to manipulate more precise morphologies.…”
