Melatonin Mitigates Drought Induced Oxidative Stress in Potato Plants through Modulation of Osmolytes, Sugar Metabolism, ABA Homeostasis and Antioxidant Enzymes

Abstract: The effect of melatonin (MT) on potato plants under drought stress is still unclear in the available literature. Here, we studied the effect of MT as a foliar application at 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mM on potato plants grown under well-watered and drought stressed conditions during the most critical period of early tuberization stage. The results indicated that under drought stress conditions, exogenous MT significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved shoot fresh weight, shoot dry weight, chlorophyll (Chl; a, b and a + b), l… Show more

“…Interestingly, exogenous melatonin relieved the drought stress in rice seedlings by turning the originally yellowing and wilting leaves back to green, and by increasing the leaves’ RWC and the root-shoot ratio. Similar findings were also verified in drought-stressed cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) [ 28 ] and potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) [ 29 ].…”

“…Exogenous ABA treatment on leaves has been shown to elicit many adaptive changes in response to water scarcity, including the enhanced GR, SOD, APX, and CAT activity in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) [81]. The exogenous ABA can also minimize ROS and increase cell membrane stability (CMS) to aid plants in their recovery after being subjected to stress [117,235]. Exogenous ABA spraying has been shown in some studies to improve plant stress tolerance in various crop species.…”

“…However, research evaluating the responses of different Zea mays L. and Glycine max L. to drought stress using exogenous ABA and fluoridone is severely limited (ABA synthesis inhibitor) [236,237]. ABA substantially enhanced the activities of SOD and POD during drought stress, with a considerable drop after re-watering [235]. Under drought stress, ABA priming substantially raised the relative water content in both wheat cultivars [195].…”

“…On the other hand, it is well documented that exogenous applied PBZ can induce ABA synthesis [27]. This increase in ABA can serve as a signaling molecule under various abiotic stresses, including heavy metals [35], salinity [36], drought [37], and chilling [38]. Further-more, ABA can induce stomatal closure, which is considered an important component of plant defense against abiotic and biotic stress [39].…”
