The agricultural and medicinal plant pomegranate (Punica granatum L. cv. Wonderful) was studied to examine the effects of wounding of cuttings and to test the effects of different concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), gibberellic acid (GA 3 ), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), melatonin (MEL), and ascorbic acid (ASC) on rooting of the shoot cuttings under mist. The data indicated that IBA had a positive influence on the rooting percentage in wounded and nonwounded cuttings. The best rooting was achieved with very thin cuttings (3-4 mm in diameter). The percentage of rooting (100.0 ± 0.0) and the number of roots per plant (15.2 ± 2.4) were positively affected if the point of severing was at an internode of the cutting. It was found that 17 mg L -1 H 2 O 2 in combination with 1000 mg L -1 IBA produced the longest roots, whereas 500 mg L -1 GA 3 in combination with the same IBA concentration (1000 mg L -1 ) reduced root length. In addition, the human hormone MEL at an application of 1.16 mg L -1 can be substituted for IBA to produce positive effects on rooting, while 352.24 mg L -1 ASC alone or in combination with IBA also promoted rooting.

Melatonin and serotonin are indoleamines first identified as neurotransmitters in vertebrates; they have now been found to be ubiquitously present across all forms of life. Both melatonin and serotonin were discovered in plants several years after their discovery in mammals, but their presence has now been confirmed in almost all plant families. The mechanisms of action of melatonin and serotonin are still poorly defined. Melatonin and serotonin possess important roles in plant growth and development, including functions in chronoregulation and modulation of reproductive development, control of root and shoot organogenesis, maintenance of plant tissues, delay of senescence, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. This review focuses on the roles of melatonin and serotonin as a novel class of plant growth regulators. Their roles in reproductive and vegetative plant growth will be examined including an overview of current hypotheses and knowledge regarding their mechanisms of action in specific responses.

Melatonin (MT) is a signaling molecule that is widely present in plants and can help them resist abiotic stresses. In this study, the effects of different concentrations of exogenous MT on the growth and development of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) under cadmium stress (50 μmol/L) were investigated. Based on their Cd accumulation differences, the "Hong Feng" and "Luo Ma" lettuce cultivars were selected as research materials. The results showed that different concentrations of MT could promote the growth of lettuce under 50 μmol/L cadmium stress. The application of exogenous melatonin can significantly increase the plant height, biomass, chlorophyll, soluble protein and soluble sugar content of lettuce, and increase the net photosynthetic rate. MT could also reduce the malondialdehyde content in lettuce under cadmium stress and increase the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities. After treatment with different concentrations of MT, the Cd content in the shoots of both cultivars significantly decreased; in contrast, the Cd content in the roots was significantly increased, which limited the transport of Cd from underground to the shoots. In addition, both Cd stress and exogenous MT induced the synthesis of endogenous MT, and 50 μmol/L MT treatment most effectively induced this response. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that MT could alleviate the negative effects of Cd stress on lettuce with different Cd accumulation differences in terms of physiological indicators. Therefore, it provides a certain reference for the potential of MT to be applied to crops threatened by heavy metals.
