Plasma medicine means the application of non-equilibrium plasmas at temperatures around body temperature, for therapeutic purposes. Non-equilibrium plasmas are weakly ionized gases, which contain charged and neutral species and electric fields and emit radiation particularly in the visible and ultraviolet range. Medically relevant cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) sources and devices are usually dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) and non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma jets (N-APPJs). Plasma diagnostic methods and modelling approaches are used to characterize the densities and fluxes of active plasma species and its interaction with surrounding matter. Distinguished from direct application of plasma on living tissue, treatment of liquids like water or physiological saline by a CAP source is realized to acquire specific biological activities. Basic understanding of plasma interaction with liquids and bio-interfaces is essential to follow biological plasma effects. Charged species, metastable species, and other atomic and molecular reactive species first produced in the main plasma ignition are transported to the discharge afterglow to finally be exposed to the biological targets. By contact with these liquid-dominated bio-interfaces, other secondary reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS, RNS) are generated. Both ROS and RNS possess strong oxidative properties and can trigger redox-related signalling pathways in cells and tissue leading to various impacts of therapeutic relevance. Dependent on the intensity of plasma exposure, redox balance in cells can be influenced in a way that oxidative eustress leads to stimulation of cellular processes or oxidative distress leads to cell death. Currently, clinical CAP application is realized mainly in wound healing. Plasma in cancer treatment (i.e. plasma oncology) is the currently emerging field of research. Future perspectives and challenges in plasma medicine are mainly directed to control and optimize CAP devices, to broaden and establish its medical applications, and to open new plasma-based therapies in medicine.

Tumor immunotherapy, compared with other treatment strategies, has the notable advantage of a long-term therapeutic effect for preventing metastasis and the recurrence of tumors, thus holding great potential for the future of advanced tumor therapy. However, due to the poor water solubility of immune modulators and immune escape properties of tumor cells, the treatment efficiency of immunotherapy is usually significantly reduced. Cyclodextrin (CD) has been repeatedly highlighted to be probably one of the most investigated building units for cancer therapy due to its elegant integration of an internal hydrophobic hollow cavity and an external hydrophilic outer surface. The application of CD for immunotherapy provides new opportunities for overcoming the aforementioned obstacles. However, there are few published reviews, to our knowledge, summarizing the use of CD for cancer immunotherapy. For this purpose, this paper provides a comprehensive summary on the application of CD for immunotherapy with an emphasis on the role, function, and reported strategies of CD in mediating immunotherapy. This review summarizes the research progress made in using CD for tumor immunotherapy, which will facilitate the generation of various CD-based immunotherapeutic delivery systems with superior anticancer efficacy.

As a type of regulated cell death (RCD), immunogenic cell death (ICD) can initiate the adaptive immune responses. Numerous reports highlight the capacity of ICD to alter the tumor immune microenvironment by releasing Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMP) or danger signals to boost the efficacy of immunotherapy. Therefore, identification of the ICD-associated biomarkers is crucial for the prediction of ICD-induced immune responses. In this report, the consensus clustering technique was used to identify two subcategories (subtypes) linked to ICD. In comparison to the ICD-low subcategory, the ICD-high subcategory showed longer survival and more immune cell infiltration. Then, a novel ICD-associated prognostic model was developed and validated for predicting the survival of patients with breast invasive carcinomas (BRCA) and is linked to the tumor immune microenvironment. To conclude, a novel ICD-based BRCA classification scheme was designed. For individuals with BRCA, this categorization will be crucial for directing the assessment of prognosis and treatment.
