Melanocytic and nevocytic malignant melanomas.Cellular and subcellular differentiation

Abstract: Two biologically and clinically different malignant melanomas are found in man. As compared to the malignant melanoma developed from junction nevus, the melanoma developed from Dubreuilh's precancerous melanosis has a slower rate of growth, metastasis and invasiveness. Furthermore, in contrast to melanoma of junction nevus origin, melanoma from Dubreuilh's melanosis is radiosensitive and does not assume the amelanotic form. Not only the malignant melanomas but also the premalignant stages exhibit differences. … Show more

“…The patients with melanoma were similar in distributions of sex, age, and histological type to all patients with melanoma in Scotland during 1979-84" (Scottish Melanoma Group, unpublished findings) except that in our patients the proportions aged 70 or more and with lentigo maligna melanoma were smaller (I 2% (21) compared with 27% (444) and 9% (p16) compared with 15% (247)) respectively. The controls had a wide range of conditions at admission, the most common being hypertension (55 patients), psoriasis (31), and fractures and dislocations (20). Altogether 214 (82%) of the 262 examinations in Glasgow were conducted by one dermatologist (JE) and 103 (90%) of the 115 examinations in Edinburgh by another (CJO'D), often with simultaneous examination of the subjects by the second dermatologist at the centre to improve validity.…”

“…More than 40 years ago, Mishima proposed two age-related pathways for cutaneous malignant melanomas CMMs that were linked to sun exposure (e.g., melanocytic and nevocytic) 20. Chronic sun exposure was a direct risk factor for melanocytic but not for nevocytic melanomas.…”
