Melaminivora alkalimesophila gen. nov., sp. nov., a melamine-degrading betaproteobacterium isolated from a melamine-producing factory

Abstract: Melaminivora alkalimesophila gen. nov., sp. nov., a melamine-degrading betaproteobacterium isolated from a melamine-producing factory A taxonomic study was carried out on strain CY1 T , which is a novel bacterium isolated from wastewater sludge of a melamine-producing factory in Sanming city, Fujian, China. Strain CY1 T was shown to rapidly and completely degrade melamine to NH 3 and CO 2 under aerobic conditions. The isolate was Gram-stain-negative, short-rod-shaped and motile by one unipolar flagellum. Growt… Show more

“…The isolate SCS5 was biochemically and physiologically characterized by using commercial identification kits (API 20NE and API ZYM identification systems, bioMerieux) under optimized conditions according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The tests for catalase and oxidase were performed using hydrogen peroxide (Sinopharm Chemical Reagent, Shanghai, China) and bioMerieux REF 55 635 oxidase reagent (bioMerieux), respectively, as described previously (50). Carbon-source utilization tests were performed using Biolog GN2 microplates (Biolog, Hayward, CA) containing 95 defined substrates.…”

“…The optimum pH of 11 is the highest value for any prokaryote reported so far [36]. Several species in the family Comamonadaceae were reported as alkali tolerant or alkaliphilic, which include Ramlibacter alkalitolerans [37] and Melaminivora alkalimesophila [38] with the optimum pH 7.0 and 9.5, respectively. Genome size of strains A1 T , H1 T and B1 T was smaller than those of the closely related strains of the family Comamonadaceae , while the G+C content was similar to those.…”
