“…In addition to the direct ROS-scavenging activity, endogenous antioxidases, like SOD and CAT, also play a vital role in protecting the skin against excessive ROS for maintaining the balance of the redox state. 49 Previous data from studies with skin cells, 50 as well as our result (Figure 4D,E), showed UV stimulus decreased the activity of SOD and CAT. This oxidative imbalance was reversed by AEO and CHA treatment as the activity of SOD and CAT increased to some extent and the level of MDA, a toxic lipid peroxidation product, decreased.…”

“…The production of ROS in significant amounts arises from UVB-induced oxidative stress-initiated inflammation-mediated skin aging. UVB-mediated skin damage is correlated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines and certain inflammatory enzymes, such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, COX-2, and iNOS [ 42 ]. In accordance with our experimental data, we have confirmed that the expression levels of IL-6, IL-8, COX-2, and iNOS were markedly increased after UVB irradiation in HaCaT cells and were successfully inhibited by treatment with HC-EA.…”

“…Essential oil and extracts derived from leaves of M. leucadendra demonstrated a series of biological activities of interest, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumoral, and anti-inflammatory properties [8,12,14,22]. Phe-nolic acids, tannins, and flavonoids have been identified as the main ones responsible for the biological effects described for this species [5,19].…”
