Meiotic chromosome number and behaviour of Onobrychis alborzensis (Fabaceae): a new species from northern Iran

Abstract: The present study is focused on the cytogenetic and morphological criteria for distinguishing a new taxon belonging to Onobrychis sect. Hymenobrychis. The new species, O. alborzensis RANJBAR & HAJMORADI is described from Alborz Province and illustrated. It is closely related to O. talagonica RECH. F. and O. michauxii DC., but differs from them in a few morphological characters such as plant indumentum, stipule size and shape and size of the leaflets, standard and calyx. Meiotic chromosome number and behavi… Show more

“…However, the number of species of this genus in Iranian flora is about 65 (Ranjbar et al 2004(Ranjbar et al , 2007Ranjbar 2009;Ranjbar et al 2010a;Ranjbar et al 2010c). The taxonomy of the genus continues to be subject of much confusion, mainly because of the different approaches to species delimitation, resulting in varying numbers of recognized species (Boissier 1872;Sirjaev 1925;Hedge 1970;Ball 1978;Duman and Vural 1990;Aktoklu 2001;Ranjbar et al 2004Ranjbar et al , 2007Ranjbar et al , 2011Ranjbar et al , 2012Ranjbar 2009;Ranjbar et al 2009f;Ranjbar et al 2010aRanjbar et al , 2010bToluei et al 2012Toluei et al , 2013.…”

“…Onobrychis mazanderanica and O. talagonica) are sister species in section Hymenobrychis of the genus Onobrychis (Safaei Chaei Kar et al, 2014;Amirahamadi et al, 2015). They are both Persian endemics with limited ranges in northern Iran (Ranjbar et al, 2011(Ranjbar et al, , 2012. Onobrychis mazanderanica has a wide distribution in Alborz, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces and is found in altitudes between 500-2400m (Ghorbanalizadeh & Akhani, 2022).…”

“…Onobrychis mazanderanica has a wide distribution in Alborz, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces and is found in altitudes between 500-2400m (Ghorbanalizadeh & Akhani, 2022). On the other hand, O. talagonica seems to have a more limited range in Tehran and Mazandaran provinces (Ranjbar et al, 2011, Talebi et al, 2020. The type locality of P. asadii is located in the Hyrcanian forest ecotone zone.…”

“…Khatoon and Ali, 1991;Mesicek and Sojak ,1992). Studies on the impact of karyotypic and meiotic behavior data on the interspecific and phylogenetic relationships in the genus are still limited (Ranjbar et al, 2009a;Hesamzadeh Hejazi and Ziaei Nasab, 2010;Ranjbar et al, 2010aRanjbar et al, , 2010bRanjbar et al, , 2010cRanjbar et al, , 2010dRanjbar et al, , 2011Ranjbar et al, , 2012. Two basic chromosome numbers (x = 7 and x = 8) and three ploidy levels (2n = 2x = 14, 2n = 4x = 28, 2n = 8x = 56 and 2n = 2x = 16, 2n = 4x = 32) are present in the genus Onobrychis.…”
