The composition of meiobenthic and macrobenthic communities between di¡erent intertidal reef-£at pools on Rocas Atoll (South Atlantic) was compared, and related to properties of the carbonate sediments and patterns of reef growth. Both univariate and multivariate statistical analyses showed that the reef height and size in£uenced the properties of the reef-derived sediments and were correlated with the composition and abundance of the benthic fauna in the intertidal pools. The temperature and the salinity between Rocas tidal £at reef pools did not vary signi¢cantly, despite the di¡erences in size, exposure degree and elevation, suggesting that percolation through the porous lime body of the reef and/or the connection between the tidal pools and seawater by blowholes have a signi¢cant e¡ect on the tidal pools. The major asymmetry in the reef topography of Rocas Atoll was observed between the leeward and windward reefs, which paralleled the largest changes in sediment properties and faunal structure inside intertidal reef pools. Sediments from the tidal pools located in the windward side of the atoll were signi¢-cantly ¢ner, the organic content higher and the benthic fauna more abundant and diverse. The results of this study suggest that signi¢cant changes in the sediment properties and benthic community structure between the intertidal reef-£at pools of Rocas Atoll may be primarily conditioned by di¡erent patterns in reef growth.

a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f oYellow River delta (YRD) is a typical example of a valuable coastal ecosystem that is under increasing anthropogenic threat in China. To understand the current health status of this region, three surveys in 2011 for the abiotic conditions and macrobenthic assemblages were performed. The concentration of trace metals were relatively low in the sediment at all sampling stations representing a good sediment quality. A total of 159 macrobenthic species were identified during the three surveys. ABC curves showed that the macrobenthic fauna at 8 sampling stations suffered disturbances from human activities. M-AMBI index indicates that the benthic ecological quality of YRD is currently still not in a good condition. Five trace metals, water temperature and depth were the main environmental variables affecting the distribution pattern of macrobenthic assemblages. Community succession has occurred over the past 60 years, as evidenced by changes of species composition, key species, distribution pattern and range.

The feeding diversity of subtidal samples of macroinvertebrates from Ria Formosa was estimated with Shannon Wiener information index and complementary evenness. The results were compared with other commonly used methodologies under the European water framework directive, such as diversity indices, AMBI and ITI.Assuming that in a healthy environment all feeding groups are present, and that no group clearly dominates, the feeding diversity is expected to be maximal and the evenness feeding diversity will be close to 1. In degraded environments some feeding groups might be absent or having low relative abundance, and generally with one or two groups dominating the community. In this way the evenness feeding diversity index would measure deviations from expected values due to a degradation of the environment. Although confirmation of this approach needs to be tested in other shallow waters, the results obtained show interesting features.To each of the 297 species belonging to the Ria Formosa data matrix a feeding group was assigned, among six groups: surface deposit feeders, sub surface deposit feeders, herbivores, suspension feeders and suspension/deposit feeders (species which have the two feeding modes depending on food availability). The carnivorous, parasites, omnivorous and scavengers were all grouped together, forming the sixth group. Most of the stations of Ria Formosa showed high feeding diversity, which could correspond to a good or high ecological status (ES) except at one location, that occasionally showed low feeding diversity. This poor condition was essentially due to low water renewal and extreme environmental variation of some parameters, such as salinity. At some locations an intermediate feeding diversity was observed mainly due to natural accumulation of organic matter. Other commonly used indices also point out to the same tendencies. 2We propose the evenness feeding diversity estimate approach as a practical and apparently robust method to estimate the ES of shallow waters, which can be used together with other common indicators.This approach has also the advantage of showing low sensibility to small samples and to low taxonomic identification effort.
