Meibomian gland atrophy with duration of Sjogren’s syndrome in adult females

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate the correlation between Sjögren syndrome (SS) duration and ocular surface parameters in patients with SS-related dry eye. Methods: We analyzed 108 eyes of 108 female patients with primary SS-related dry eye. Meibomian gland (MG) dysfunction, MG dropout, lipid layer thickness (LLT), partial and total blinking, and partial blinking rate (PBR) were measured using a LipiView ® II ocular surface interferometer (TearScience, Morrisville, NC, USA). All patients underwent rheumatoid serologic te… Show more

“…7,9 Meibomian gland dysfunction is an important cause of dry eye. 25 A study indicated that a longer duration of pSS was associated with more severe meibomian gland atrophy after controlling for age, 26 partially explaining the higher proportion of dry eyes in pSS patients with a long disease duration reported in this study. Furthermore, pSS patients with a long disease duration had higher elasticity scores of parotid glands and a more severe degree of parotid main ductal stenosis.…”

“…In fact, the work of Zhang [ 14 ] suggests a lower sensitivity of SGUS in early phases of disease, while others demonstrate stability of gland abnormalities over time [ 19 ]. In other studies, disease duration correlates with the degree of gland atrophy [ 20 ]. Our data show more frequent diagnostic SGUS in longer disease duration.…”

“…The participants were asked to open their eyes wide and look straight, and a single ophthalmologist (KK) measured the time taken for a black spot or line to appear on the cornea. Interval between last blink to the first sign of tear film rupture was recorded as TBUT [ 45 , 46 ]. While measuring TBUT, the CFS score (0–9) was also evaluated [ 47 ].…”
