PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide a brief overview from the literature on how best to define megaprojects in contemporary contexts. There is a need for a definition that encompasses a complex matrix of characteristics, inclusive of positive and negative aspects, which are not necessarily industry or sector specific. Whilst megaprojects have often been described and defined in terms of cost, they are more accurately delineated by their convolutions. Intricacies arise from political intrigues surrounding funding of such projects and managing and governing complex social and organisational relations. Points for future research are also identified, including: contexts; procurement; institutional perspectives; constituting megaproject cultures; and sustainability. Design/methodology/approachAn analysis of international megaproject literature over the past five years combined with seminal works was undertaken. Drawing on the broad literature of project and program management combined with elements of organizational theory. Whilst some examples are cited, in depth case analysis has not been covered. FindingsAlbeit that the scale of some megaprojects is comparable to national GDP's, seven more characteristics beyond size have been identified which, distinguish megaprojects from large projects. These include: reach; duration; risks and uncertainties; widely disparate actors; areas of controversy such as dispute resolution; and legal and regulatory issues. Originality/valueRigorous stakeholder engagement is critical for success in megaprojects and collaborative learnings need to be exchanged. The longer term social and economic impacts need to be viewed as an imperative rather than a hindrance to the planning and execution of megaprojects and complexity rather than cost more aptly defines megaprojects.

Abstract. Today, in new product development projects, "NPDs", time is the cutting edge. The time to market in new product development projects is a key factor in the competition between innovative companies. Research has shown that time can be managed, and speed too. Our concern in this paper is to study the time factor in the case of new product development projects based on a time-cost trade-off curve, which is important for the project success by delivering the product as fast as possible. We will explain the motivation behind delivering fast in NPD projects. In construction projects, a customer initially contracts for a project from a contractor based on specifications, budget and delay. Time to market is a key success factor in new product development projects. Does time to delivery have high importance in construction projects? We conclude by showing the significance of NPD projects' speed with respect to management in construction projects.

Major Construction projects are unique construction projects known for their complexity, vast size, expensive cost and long time frame compared to conventional construction projects. They may lead to cost overruns and lower-than-predicted revenues that hinder economic growth instead of advancing it. For ameliorating the performance of the construction industry and delivering successful projects, that satisfies their users, it is imperative to ascertain various project-related factors for Major Construction projects. From the literature analysis, it was found that the type of project, size of project, project complexity, innovations and uniqueness were important attributes under project-related factors. Due to limitations in past researches regarding project-related factors of Major construction projects, this paper aims to study the various project-related factors affecting Major construction projects through literature analysis and emphasizes the important factors among them that are crucial for project success in order to reduce costs overruns and project failures and to forecast the performance level of Major project before it commences. INTRODUCTIONMajor Construction projects can be seen as the wild beasts in the project world, they are hard to tame, known for their complexity, vast size, expensive cost, and long time frame compared to conventional construction projects. These projects bring big changes in the geography of countries and life of people. Some of these Major Construction projects become landmarks for a country and bring significant prosperity, but some become unforgettable catastrophes. Uncertainty and complexity due to their huge size and long time duration are commonly seen in Major Construction projects. The large scale engineering projects are described on the basis of five attributes: (i) "high" capital cost, (ii) "long" duration but program urgency, (iii) technologically and logistically demanding, (vi) requiring multidisciplinary inputs from many organizations, and (v) leading to a "virtual enterprise" for the execution of the project. Also, they lead to cost overruns and lower-than-predicted revenues that hinder economic growth instead of advancing it.
